Verifying International Credentials

When applying to a degree program, you must have your undergraduate credits and/or degrees evaluated if they were earned outside the United States.

  • Before starting coursework toward a degree at Harvard Extension School, you should have your international transcripts evaluated by the Center for Educational Documentation (CED), the only agency from which we will accept evaluations. If you wait until you begin the degree program application process, your admission may be delayed or otherwise jeopardized by the results of an evaluation.
  • After you've received your copy of the CED evaluation, submit a request for an eligibility review from the Admissions Office.
    • The CED makes initial eligibility recommendations but the Admissions Office makes final eligibility determinations.
  • We accept only official transcripts (i.e., transcripts that are issued directly from the school to our office) and CED evaluations based on official transcripts (i.e., transcripts that are issued directly from the school to the CED).

Undergraduate Applicants

If you earned undergraduate credit from a college or university outside the United States, contact the institution and request two official transcripts: one to be sent directly to the CED and one to be sent directly to the Admissions Office.

Students must contact the CED to request a course-by-course evaluation, for which a fee is charged. Instruct the CED to send its evaluation directly to the Harvard Extension School Admissions Office, 51 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA 02138 or admissions@extension.harvard.edu.

Graduate Program Applicants

If you've earned an undergraduate degree outside the United States, it must be evaluated by the CED. Contact the institution and request two official transcripts: one to be sent directly to the CED and one to be sent directly to the Admissions Office.

Students must contact the CED to request a general evaluation, for which a fee is charged. Instruct the CED to send its evaluation directly to the Harvard Extension School Admissions Office, 51 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA 02138 or admissions@extension.harvard.edu.

Premedical Program Applicants

If you have earned an undergraduate degree outside the United States, it must be evaluated by the CED to confirm that your degree is equivalent to a four-year US bachelor's degree awarded by a college or university that was regionally accredited during the time of your attendance and graduation.

Contact the institution and request two official transcripts: one to be sent directly to the CED and one to be sent directly to the Premedical Program Office.

Students must contact the CED to request a general evaluation, for which a fee is charged. Instruct the CED to send its evaluation directly to the Premedical Program, Harvard Extension School, 51 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA 02138 or hcp@extension.harvard.edu.

Three-year degrees

Ordinarily, only four-year bachelor's degrees are considered acceptable for eligibility to our graduate program. Three-year degrees, including those earned from schools participating in the Bologna process, are considered on a case-by-case basis.

If you possess a three-year bachelor's degree and have completed additional advanced academic coursework at a school other than Harvard Extension School, these courses should be included in the CED's general evaluation. Contact that school and request an official transcript to be sent directly to the CED. The Admissions Office does not need to receive a transcript that reflects this additional coursework; we require only a CED evaluation of it.
