Maurie Kelly has been with the Harvard Division of Continuing Education Professional Development Program for many years and teaches the Negotiation Skills and the Advanced Negotiation Skills seminars. In addition, she has been a member of the faculty at Penn State University since 1997. She holds a PhD in organizational development, a masters of information science, and a degree in history. Her work at Penn State includes teaching in the Smeal College of Business, as well as serving as an associate faculty member with the Sustainability Institute, the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences, and the Institutes of Energy and the Environment.
Maurie has more than thirty years of professional experience working with, and developing solutions for, a wide range of organizations from government to industry to NGOs. Her work includes initiatives with the US Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the US Department of State, the National Institutes of Health, the Pennsylvania Governor’s Office of Administration, the City of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, and the US Geological Survey. In recent years, her research has focused on negotiation, international business and national policies, sustainability, women and negotiation, and crisis leadership.
Her teaching experience includes courses in international business, negotiation, conflict resolution, strategic management, leadership, and sustainability. She has taught courses and seminars for Harvard Extension School, UCLA, Penn State, the University of Illinois, and consults with businesses and organizations across the globe. In 2019, she received the Joanne Fussa Distinguished Teaching Award for her work at Harvard University Extension School. She has written extensively on a diverse number of topics including crisis leadership, communication, technology, big data, and environmental stewardship.
In addition to her work, Maurie is involved with numerous advisory boards, nonprofits, and humanitarian organizations internationally and locally. She is on the board of advisors for Good Sun, an organization that engages with communities to develop and deploy energy solutions in the US and countries such as Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya. Maurie has also supported groups such as She’s the First (an organization that fights for global education equality and girls' rights worldwide). In addition, she has served on numerous government advisory boards and committees across multiple administrations.
Throughout her many years of teaching thousands of participants in academic courses and professional development seminars, she remains focused on one goal: to inspire and empower others to be the most successful negotiators, communicators, and leaders they can be and provide them with the tools and knowledge they need to get there.
