Janet Sylvester, PhD

Janet Sylvester has taught creative and expository writing at Harvard University, Old Dominion University, and University of Tampa, among others. Her first book of poetry, That Mulberry Wine, was published by Wesleyan University Press and her second, The Mark of Flesh, by Norton. Her new book, And Not to Break, won the 2019 Lauria/Frasca Poetry Prize and has just been published by Bordighera Press (New York City). Her poems have appeared in many journals and anthologies, including Best American Poetry, Pushcart Prize, Colorado Review, Triquarterly, Boulevard, and Virginia Quarterly Review. She has been awarded multiple fellowships at Yaddo, MacDowell, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. A long-time member of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP), she worked as a mentor in the first semester of Writer to Writer, their mentorship program.
