Spotlight: Distance Education
Four students answer questions about what it’s like to take courses online.
International Students
Harvard Extension School invites international students from around the world to explore our distance education offerings.
Take a course online
The Extension school offers more than 100 online courses that are open to students around the world.
The Extension School does not issue I-20s. If you are interested in part-time study, consult the US embassy or consulate in your country to learn which visa is appropriate or required to do so.
Degree programs
Extension School degree programs are designed as part-time programs for working professionals. Thus, we do not offer I-20s. In addition, we do not offer degrees entirely online. Our programs involve a combination of online and on-campus courses. Each degree program sets its own residency requirements, which can range from a minimum of 1 on-campus-only course to 6 on-campus-only courses. Many residency requirements can be completed at Harvard Summer School, which issues I-20s for full-time study and offers housing.
For more information, see Online Course Options within the degree requirements section of the program that interests you.
English language study
Local students can learn English at Harvard Extension School through day and evening courses offered on campus at all levels of proficiency. See the Institute for English Language Programs website.
English proficiency
All courses except those in the Institute for English Language Programs require English proficiency, and proof of proficiency must be provided for some courses. In addition, degree programs have a separate English proficiency requirement for admission, which is described in each program section.
