Professor Donald Pfister Appointed Interim Dean of Harvard College
Donald Pfister, Asa Gray Professor of Systematic Botany, dean of Harvard Summer School, and long-time Harvard Extension School faculty member, has been appointed interim dean of Harvard College, effective July 10. Dean Pfister has been dean of the Summer School since 2008, bringing innovative courses to the program in Cambridge and supporting the creation of several new faculty-led study abroad programs. He has taught at Harvard Extension School for more than 30 years and has served on the Extension School’s Administrative Board. He is also currently acting director of the Harvard University Herbaria and curator of the Farlow Reference Library and Herbarium.
Dean Pfister will serve as dean of Harvard College on an interim basis, taking over for Evelynn M. Hammonds, who completed her five-year term as dean at the beginning of the month. In the fall, Michael Smith, dean of Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, will launch a search for the new College dean. He will convene an advisory committee of faculty and will be consulting broadly with faculty, students, staff, and alumni.
To ensure continuity, Dean Pfister expects to finish his dean responsibilities of the current Harvard Summer School session. An acting dean will be announced at a later date.
