This course teaches participants the techniques of capturing and maintaining the attention of an audience by focusing on the content and delivery aspects of public address. Each student has the opportunity to present several speeches. (4 credits)

This intensive professional public speaking course is designed to help students craft and deliver powerful speeches that leave a lasting impression. Students explore the specific verbal and nonverbal public speaking techniques that professional speakers use to create strong impressions, sell their perspectives, and inspire their audiences to act. This course focuses on voice and articulation, with special emphais on accent reduction–both second language and regional, oral interpretation (reading aloud), oral presentation skills, and oral expository and persuasive abilities. Topics include correct breathing, projection, inflection and variety, pronunciation, enunciation, vocal emphasis, vocal quality, and use of the International Phonetic Alphabet. (4 credits)
SPCH E-130 Essentials of Executive Speaking

This advanced course covers the principles of effective interpersonal communication in the workplace which includes, in part, giving and taking criticism, conflict management, as well as understanding situations and adapting your message accordingly. Advanced public speaking skills such as use of vocal variation, techniques for persuasion, handling questions and answers, PowerPoint, and advanced use of language and narratives are discussed. Students present several speeches throughout the semester and discuss and analyze presentations in class. Prerequisite: a basic public speaking course. (4 credits)
