This course is an introduction to modern Mandarin pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and writing using Chinese characters and romanization. Emphasis is on conversation. Approximately 400 characters and half of the basic grammar are learned. Pinyin romanization and simplified characters are used. Prerequisite: previous study of a foreign language highly desirable. (4 credits)

This course is a continuation of CHIN E-1. Speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills are emphasized through introduction of additional vocabulary and grammar patterns. Students entering CHIN E-2 should know pinyin romanization and a minimum of 200 characters. Prerequisite: CHIN E-1, or the equivalent. (4 credits)

This course is designed for those students with some prior knowledge of Mandarin Chinese. It is intended to consolidate the students' knowledge of Mandarin and improve their ability in the four skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to speak Chinese with some fluency on daily conversational topics, achieve a basic level of competence with characters and reading comprehension, and be able to write some simple compositions with characters learned. Prerequisite: CHIN E-2, or the equivalent. (4 credits)
