Distance education classes at Harvard Extension School have either an online video or live web-conference format. Some courses also include a weekend of intensive on-campus lectures. Online courses span a full semester and have scheduled assignments and exams. But the formats differ in presentation and technical requirements.

Courses featuring online videos

These online courses feature videos of faculty lecturing on campus, and you watch the videos at your convenience. You interact with classmates and faculty via online media. In some cases, class meetings on-campus are broadcast live.

Check course syllabi or websites to see if you can participate live during class meeting times and to learn if live participation is required.

Courses featuring web conferences

You participate in your virtual classroom at the scheduled meeting time each week. These courses use web-conference software. In most, there are no videos. You communicate live with the instructor and other students by chat or voice technology.
