Extension On Tap: Beer Tasting at Harpoon Brewery

Thursday, October 16

Harpoon Brewing Company

Taste, compare, and enjoy a selection of fresh, fun, and interesting Harpoon beers, as well as a complementary selection of fine foods. This private tasting for Extension School alumni and friends will be led by a master brewer at Harpoon Brewery.

Tickets for alumni and friends are $25 each. Alumni from the classes of 2006–08 may purchase tickets for $20 each. All guests must be 21 or older to participate in this event. Ample free parking is available at the brewery.

Alumni Speakers Series: Sal Perisano, ALM ’87

Sal Perisano, ALM ’87, has served as a director of iParty Corporation since October 1998 and its Chief Executive Officer since April 1999. Previously, Sal was a member of the board of directors of The Big Party Corporation from 1992–2000 and its president and chairman of the board from 1992–98. In 1981, he co-founded Videosmith, which became Boston’s dominant video retailer before being sold in 1989 to Xtravision PLC. Sal stayed on as a director and was later named chief executive officer of the parent company, which was subsequently acquired by Blockbuster Video.

Alumni Speakers Series: Lois Kelly, CSS ’86

Lois Kelly, CSS ’86, began her media career as a journalist, eventually moving on to executive roles in a series of public relations agencies. She later co-founded Thunder House, an early interactive marketing agency that was acquired by McCann Erickson. Lois is now a partner at Beeline Labs, and in 2007, she published Beyond Buzz: The Next Generation of Word of Mouth Marketing, the gold medal recipient of the 2008 Axiom Business Book Award for best marketing/advertising/public relations book. She is also an officer and trustee of Trinity Repertory Theater in Providence.

Alumni Speakers Series: John Vermilye, ALB ’80

John Vermilye, ALB ’80, is the founder and chief executive officer of Travel Sentry. John and his staff work closely with luggage lock and travel accessory manufacturers and governments to create security solutions for the transportation industry. A 30-year veteran of the airline business, John began his career as a baggage handler at Boston’s Logan Airport while attending Harvard Extension School. Upon graduation, he joined Eastern Airline’s management training program and spent the next 15 years with the airline, followed by careers with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in Geneva, Switzerland and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

After Hours at the Harvard Peabody Museum

Friday, November 7

Join us for a private evening at the Harvard Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. Founded in 1866, the Peabody Museum is one of the oldest museums in the world devoted to anthropology, and it houses one of the most comprehensive records of human cultural history in the western hemisphere. Docents from the museum will be on hand to answer your questions about the collection and lead tours. Refreshments, including light hors d’oevres, desserts, wines, and coffee, will be served all evening long.

Alumni Speaker Series: James Dougherty, CSS ’’83

Thursday, November 13

As operating partner at Great Hill Partners in Boston, Jim Dougherty, CSS ’83, works with portfolio company management teams and participates in investment evaluation and transaction diligence. Before joining Great Hill, Jim turned around and built three companies: IntraLinks, Gartner Group and MetaMatrix. Previously, Jim was head of Lotus’ internet division and CEO of Prodigy Software.

Jim also serves as a senior fellow in business and foreign policy on the Council on Foreign Relations, as a director of the Starlight Children’s Foundation, and as a board member of the Foreign Policy Association. He holds a master of international economics degree from Columbia University, a CSS from Harvard University and a bachelor’s degree in public administration from Framingham State College.

Harvard vs. Yale Tailgate Party: The Game at Harvard Stadium

Join us for a tailgate party with all the fixings as the Crimson squad takes on archrival Yale in Harvard Stadium. Tickets for Harvard Extension alumni and friends are $25 per person. Alumni from the classes of 2006–08 may purchase tickets for $20 per person.

After Hours at the Harvard Museum of Natural History

Friday, December 5
5:30–9 pm
26 Oxford Street, Cambridge

Join us for a private evening at Harvard Museum of Natural History. The Harvard Museum of Natural History was established in 1998 to unite three storied research museums at the University: the Museum of Comparative Zoology, the Harvard University Herbaria, and the Mineralogical and Geological Museum. The specimens of these three collections total about 21 million, of which the very best are on display in the galleries. All 17 galleries will be open during this event, including the special exhibition galleries, the Glass Flowers gallery, and the zoological and mineralogical galleries. Docents from the museum will be on hand to answer your questions about the collections and lead tours. Refreshments, including light hors d’oevres, desserts, wines, and coffee, will be served all evening long.
