Matthew K. Nock

Professor of Psychology, Harvard University
Matthew K. Nock is a professor of psychology and director of the laboratory for clinical and developmental research in the department of psychology at Harvard University. Nock received his PhD in psychology from Yale University and completed his clinical internship at Bellevue Hospital and the NYU Child Study Center. His scholarly work focuses on advancing the understanding of why people behave in ways that are harmful to themselves, with an emphasis on suicide and other forms of direct self-harm. His research is funded by multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health and several private foundations. He has been a consultant and scientific advisor to the National Institutes of Health, the World Health Organization World Mental Health Survey Initiative, the American Psychological Association, and the American Psychiatric Association DSM-V Task Force. In addition to his research, Nock teaches courses at Harvard on self-destructive behaviors, research methods, statistics, developmental psychopathology, and cultural diversity, for which he has received several teaching awards including the Roslyn Abramson Teaching Award and the Petra T. Shattuck Excellence in Teaching Award.
