Honors and Prizes

Candidates with GPAs of 3.33 or higher graduate cum laude (with honors), and those with GPAs of 3.5 or higher earn the Dean’s List Academic Achievement Award. The top 10 percent of the graduating class in good standing are inducted into the Harvard Extension School’s Phi Beta chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda, the national honor society for nontraditional students. Undergraduate candidates are also eligible for a number of student prizes.

Honors and prizes

Cum Laude (with honors). ALB candidates who have final cumulative GPAs of 3.33 or higher graduate cum laude.

Dean’s List Academic Achievement Award. AA and ALB candidates who have final cumulative GPAs of 3.5 or higher receive the Dean’s List Academic Achievement Award.

Phi Beta Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda. Each year the top 10 percent of the ALB graduating class is inducted into the Extension School’s chapter, Phi Beta, of Alpha Sigma Lambda (ASL). ASL is the premier national honor society for the adult nontraditional student and is the only chapter-based national honor society to provide adult nontraditional students with an opportunity for the national recognition they deserve. Reginald H. Phelps Prize. Three prizes are awarded to ALB graduates for academic achievement and character.

Annamae and Allan R. Crite Prize. ALB graduates are eligible for this award, which is granted on the basis of academic achievement and dedication to learning and the arts.

Santo J. Aurelio Prize. Awarded to AA or ALB degree recipients aged 50 or older, this prize acknowledges distinguished and unique records of academic achievement and character.

Class Marshal. Each year 2 ALB graduates in the top of their class are chosen to represent their class at graduation.

Derek Bok Public Service Prize. This Commencement award recognizes creative initiatives in community service or long-standing records of civic achievement among degree graduates.

Commencement Speaker Prize. During their graduation year, AA and ALB candidates are invited to enter the Commencement speaker competition. Interested students should review our Commencement speech and application guidelines.
