Curriculum Choices
There are a number of options for candidates interested in pursuing careers that require advanced degrees. View the listing of optional focused fields of study in your area of concentration.
Business. Prepare for an MBA or a career in business by choosing a field of study in computer science, economics, or mathematics; pursuing a leadership role through the Harvard Extension Student Association; and earning a professional citation (see below).
Education. Earn a middle or high school preliminary teaching license in biology, English, history, mathematics, or political science/political philosophy by earning a field of study in 1 these fields; work with our educational advisor; and participate in an internship at St. Peters School in Cambridge to gain classroom experience (see Faculty Aide Program).
Law. Pursue a prelaw track by selecting courses in government, history, philosophy, public speaking, and writing; volunteering through Phillips Brooks House; completing a reading and research course; and earning a legal studies citation (see below).
Medicine. Apply to the Health Careers Program, which offers a premedical curriculum and sponsors students in their applications to medical school. As an ALB candidate, you do not need a bachelor’s degree to apply.
Psychology. Prepare for a clinical psychology career or graduate program by selecting courses in biology, psychology, statistics, and writing; applying for Special Student status; and participating in the Faculty Aide Program to gain research experience.
Professional courses
If you have completed 32 credits at Harvard with a 3.0 or higher GPA you may complement your liberal arts education with up to 4 professional courses in communication in business, information systems management, management, mathematics for teaching, and museum studies. To enroll, submit a professional course petition.

Professional citations
You may earn 1 professional citation by completing 4 courses of your choosing that fall under 1 professional area with B– or higher grades. Citations are awarded 3 times a year in November, March, and May, and they appear on the transcript. To earn a citation, submit a citation petition. Citations are offered in the following areas, and you may also propose citations of your own design:
