Mathematics for Teaching

Thesis and Capstone

To create meaningful learning experiences for a diverse group of students, the math for teaching degree program offers 2 tracks.

Choosing between the thesis and capstone tracks

Thesis track

The thesis track provides candidates with an opportunity for independent work on a project of their own design. Being able to select a thesis topic makes this a good option for those who might have been intrigued by a particular issue in mathematics and teaching that was not covered in the regularly offered classes.

This is also a good choice for those who would like to spend time developing their research and writing skills. In addition, work done on a thesis project can be useful for career advancement and as preparation for advanced study.

Capstone track

The capstone track involves additional coursework and a capstone course. This option is especially good for those who would like to continue strengthening their mathematical skills by taking additional math classes. It also gives candidates an opportunity to participate in the teaching projects capstone course.

This capstone course has been designed to help current and prospective math teachers investigate a variety of approaches to teaching, with the goal of helping candidates develop fresh and innovative approaches to communicating mathematics in the classroom.

You are encouraged to meet with program director, Andrew Engelward, to discuss the benefits of each option.
