Online Course Options
The Graduate Program in Mathematics for Teaching is primarily an on-campus program, which gives students the opportunity to be part of the larger Harvard community, connect with Harvard faculty and other area mathematics teachers, and use the many resources available on campus, including a renowned library.
Residency requirement
The degree program requires 4 on-campus-only courses. If you live far from Boston, depending on course availability and your track the residency may be completed during the summer at Harvard Summer School. The Summer School typically offers intensive 3-week mathematics for teaching courses and housing. And it issues I-20s to international students who enroll full time.
Requirement guidelines
The majority of the program’s core math courses (300-level), as well as the required MATH E-16, are typically only offered on campus.
If you have chosen the capstone track, be aware that the capstone course, MATH E-599, is only offered as an on-campus course, so 1 of your semesters of residency will need to occur when the capstone course is offered (currently during the spring semester).
-
If you have chosen the thesis track, we recommend you work on your thesis proposal during the time that you are in residence so that you are able to meet in person with your research advisor.
Although many required mathematics for teaching courses are available only on campus, a selection of electives are provided online.
See the degree course search find online elective courses that count toward the degree. To learn more about taking courses online, see Distance Education.
