Using FAS Accounts

E-Mail

E-mail is handled through the FAS server; you can access your account from any machine on or off campus that is connected to the Internet as follows:

  1. Direct web browser to the URL http://webmail.fas.harvard.edu.
  2. Log in with FAS username and password.

FAS accounts may also be accessed using a secure shell (SSH) client as follows:

  1. Use secure shell (SSH) client to connect to www.fas.harvard.edu.
  2. Log in using FAS username and password.
  3. After a few system announcements, there will be a command line prompt that reads “fas%.” Pine mail-reader software is recommended for use in the public labs. To select Pine, type “pine” at the fas% prompt and press Return or Enter.
  4. When finished, type “logout” at the fas% prompt and press Return or Enter.

Information about using Pine may be found on the FAS computer services website.

Changing Your E-Mail Address

If you would like your FAS e-mail account to be the address where instructors and administrators contact you, please update your e-mail address via online services.

Forwarding Your FAS E-Mail to Another Account

You may set up forwarding from your FAS e-mail account to your other e-mail accounts at www.fas.harvard.edu/fasit/myaccount.

Printing

Printing is free at 53 Church Street and in the Grossman Library for all Extension School students. The Science Center charges five cents per page for standard laser printing. To print from any of the laser printers located in the Science Center, you must have both an FAS computer account and money in your printing budget.

Establishing a Science Center Printing Budget

You may use Crimson Cash, which is a debit account accessed through your Harvard ID number, to transfer money to your printing budget. You may add funds to your Crimson Cash account at any one of several value-transfer stations located on campus or at www.cash.harvard.edu. User assistants at the Science Center help desk can help you transfer money from your Crimson Cash account to your printing budget. Print system users may also purchase additional printing budget funds with a credit card online at http://www.fas.harvard.edu/printing.

Any balance that remains in your printing budgets is nonrefundable. You are responsible for monitoring your own printing budget.
