Health Insurance
For currently admitted degree, certificate, and diploma candidates only, the following information applies.
Mandatory Coverage
Under Massachusetts law, health insurance is required if:
- You are a degree, certificate, or diploma candidate who is registered in 12 or more credits per term. If you are admitted to a program at any point during a term, you are subject to the requirement.
- You are an international student who has an I-20 issued by the Extension School.
If you fall into either category, you are automatically enrolled in the Harvard University student health plan and will be billed accordingly unless you certify that you have equivalent US coverage by completing a student health plan waiver form. Insurance charges cannot be prorated or reversed after the deadlines or if you have incurred medical charges.
To reverse the health plan charge, waiver forms must be submitted to Student Financial Services by the following dates:
- September 30 for fall
- February 27 for spring
The health plan fee is $1,415 for six months. Periods of coverage are August 1 to January 31 and February 1 to July 31. Shorter coverage periods are not available.
The University plan provides comprehensive health-care services through University Health Services (UHS), Holyoke Center, and at clinics located at the Harvard Medical, Business, and Law schools. Coverage for services outside of UHS is provided through Blue Cross Blue Shield. Spouses and children are also eligible for coverage (appropriate documentation required). For more information visit the UHS website, or call the Extension School, (617) 495-4293.
Voluntary Coverage
Voluntary coverage in the Harvard University student health plan is available to all admitted degree, certificate, and diploma candidates currently enrolled in fewer than 12 credits, or for those admitted candidates who are not currently registered but have taken classes at Harvard Extension School within the past year. To enroll, you must submit the student health plan enrollment form to Student Financial Services by the deadlines below.
