Overview
Prepare for a career in print journalism or publishing through technical and professional training designed to develop your writing and communication skills. We offer a graduate degree in journalism and a certificate focused on publishing and communications.
Both programs feature on-campus and online courses, although only a limited number of courses required for the degree are offered online.
Master of Liberal Arts in Journalism Curriculum Summary
The only journalism degree available at Harvard, the Master of Liberal Arts in Journalism is a challenging program for writers and editors.
As a degree candidate, you pursue either a thesis or capstone track:
Thesis track. You complete eight courses (four core courses and four electives), an internship, and a master’s thesis.
Capstone track. You complete 10 courses (four core courses and six electives), an internship, and a capstone project.

Certificate in Publishing and Communications Curriculum Summary
Designed for students who wish to gain professional training in publishing and media production, the Certificate in Publishing and Communications is a great next step for your career.
To earn the Certificate in Publishing and Communications, you complete seven courses (three core courses and four electives) and an internship.
Getting Started: Admission to a Program
We consider success in prerequisite coursework at Harvard Extension School to be a key predictor of success in the program. Thus, to apply you must have completed three courses from the program curriculum and earned at least a B in each. For the master’s degree, one must be the proseminar JOUR E-100, and for the certificate, one must be EXPO E-170. Upon admission, the courses count toward your program.
