Internship

An internship enables you to gain experience in the field while earning credit toward your degree.

Requirements

Before starting the internship process, you must be in good academic standing and have completed six degree courses, including the four core courses.

  1. Choose an internship. Identify a publication where you would like to complete an internship. Internships must be done under the guidance of a site supervisor and internship coordinator.

  2. Apply. Complete and submit an ALM in Journalism internship application form (available from the ALM in Journalism Office).

  3. Register. Once your application is approved, you may register for the course. An internship counts as one Harvard-affiliated-instructor course and is taken pass/fail. International students with an I-20 from the Extension School must register during the regular registration periods. All other students may register throughout the year.

To receive credit for an internship in the fall term, register by December 7; to receive credit in the spring term, register by April 26. If you register after the April deadline, you will be registered in the summer term and may pay a higher tuition.

  4. Get to work. Most internships take place during regular business hours, so you will need to plan your schedule accordingly.

  5. Receive credit. To receive credit you must complete 200 internship hours and submit a written report about your experience. If you intend to graduate in June, you must complete the internship and ensure your internship supervisor submits the evaluation form by May 8.
