Prepracticum/Practicum

If you are in the ITL track, you must complete a prepracticum (56 hours) and pass the required Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL). Both requirements must be completed before you enroll in EDUC E-200b, in which you complete a 300-hour practicum in two of three levels of public school: elementary, middle, or high school (150 hours at each level).

Practicums take place during regular school hours, so you should plan your schedule accordingly. This may mean taking a leave of absence or quitting your job for the four to five months it takes to complete the practicum.

Faculty Aide Program

You may become a research assistant to a faculty member if you have a 3.33 or higher grade point average (GPA) and have completed four courses at the Extension School. This program provides an opportunity to sharpen your research skills while supporting faculty in their research projects. You can also gain classroom experience through internship opportunities at St. Peter’s School. You can earn $12 an hour for up to 50 hours. Review the Faculty Aide Program information sheet and petition (download form).

Special Student Status

Special Student status at Harvard’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) enables you to enroll in two GSAS courses per term for one academic year. If you have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have completed four courses at the Extension School, you may apply with recommendations from the program director and two instructors. You pay the full GSAS tuition of $4,011 per course.

Consult Stephen Blinn by September 5 for spring 2009 and February 6 for fall 2009 to receive approval and a letter of recommendation. The program may not accept courses that are not preapproved.
