Religious Studies and Education Citation
Harvard Extension School and Harvard Divinity School have collaborated to offer a Citation in Religious Studies and Education to teachers or teacher candidates who require the legal, methodological, and content competencies to teach about religion. Teachers can earn professional development units through the Harvard Divinity School’s Program in Religious Studies and Education for each successfully completed religious studies citation course.
How to Earn the Citation
The citation is awarded to students who have a bachelor of arts degree or equivalent upon completion of four religious studies and education courses (see list below) taken for graduate credit within a three-year timeframe and with a grade of B– or better. Courses must be taught by faculty from Harvard Divinity School or the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences’ Committee on the Study of Religion who have the rank of assistant professor, associate professor, senior lecturer, professor of the practice, or professor.
Up to two previous courses completed from fall 2007 through summer 2009 can be counted toward the four needed for citations awarded in 2008–09. Upon completion of the fourth course (Methods in Religious Studies and Education: Integrating the Study of Religion into the Curricula) you can request the citation. The award of the citation is reflected on the Harvard Extension School transcript.
Citations are not awarded retroactively; the request must be made at the end of the semester upon completion of the methods course.
