Harvard Library System

Borrowing Privileges

Extension School degree, certificate, and diploma program candidates with Harvard University photo IDs have borrowing privileges at Harvard University libraries.

Graduate-credit students who are not program candidates but need borrowing privileges at Widener Library may purchase special borrower's cards for $100 per term from the privileges desk in Widener Library. Present your registration confirmation and photo ID to purchase borrower’s cards.

Electronic Resources

While you are registered for a course, you have access to approximately 3,000 databases and journals through the Harvard Libraries Portal. Licensed electronic resources are accessible from most computers within Harvard libraries or remotely using a Harvard ID number and PIN. After the semester ends, electronic resources are only available to candidates in degree, certificate, and diploma programs. The use of electronic resources for nonscholarly or commercial purposes is prohibited. For more information, call Mary Frances Angelini, Grossman Library, (617) 495-4163. Also see Library Use.

Widener Library Reading Room

If you are not a degree, certificate, or diploma candidate, you may request an access card for the Widener Library Reading Room by presenting your registration confirmation and a photo ID at the privileges desk. This card allows unlimited use of the reading room, the reference area, and the periodicals area for one semester. You do not have access to the stacks, but you can request that materials be paged to a desk in the reading room. Photocopying may be done with the permission of the staff.

Limited Access

You may purchase access cards to Baker Library at the Business School by presenting your registration confirmation and a photo ID.

If you are not a program candidate you can visit the Countway Library in the Longwood Medical Area, but you do not have borrowing privileges. Present your registration confirmation and photo ID at the privileges desk, where you are issued passes valid for the semester.
