Payment
Tuition is listed beside each course. Full payment of tuition and fees is required upon registration. Students who do not submit full payment are not registered. The Extension School does not offer an installment or deferred-payment plan.
Credit Card Payments
Online payment by credit card or e-check, if available, is preferred. Master Card, Visa, American Express, and Discover are accepted. If a credit card is declined online, it is the student's responsibility to contact the bank that issued the card. The Extension School is not responsible for fluctuations in international exchange rates or interest charges due to the timing of credit card charges or refunds. The card number, expiration date, and cardholder's printed name and signature are required on the registration form. Registration forms may be returned unprocessed to students if the information submitted is incomplete or the credit card payment is declined.
Other Forms of Payment
Cash. Cash payments are accepted in person at Student Financial Services during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. Students should not send cash through the mail.
Checks. Certified checks, traveler's checks, cashier's checks, money orders, and personal checks made payable to Harvard Extension School are accepted. Checks must be drawn on a US bank and include proper routing numbers. This year the Extension School may begin to electronically convert and process all paper checks received using the Automated Clearing House network, under the rules governed by the National Automated Clearing House Association and the Federal Reserve Bank.
Company billings. Many Boston-area employers provide tuition assistance for eligible employees. Students may arrange to have their tuition billed directly to their employers if the organization has an established account with the Division of Continuing Education. Students are responsible for their bills if their company's account remains unpaid. Contact Student Financial Services for more information.
Tuition Assistance Plan (TAP). Harvard University staff members who are on the regular payroll and have worked at least 17.5 hours per week since July 1 for fall courses and November 1 for spring courses are eligible for TAP. The fee for each course is $40. Employees are encouraged to register online. They may, however, submit registration forms with TAP forms and fees. TAP fees are nonrefundable unless students have been closed out of all courses or a course has been canceled. Students who register for graduate credit using TAP should also include either the payroll deduction form or the graduate tax exemption form available online (login required) or from the Benefit Services Group, Holyoke Center 664. Students with questions about TAP eligibility should call the Benefits Services Group at (617) 496-4001.
Financial aid and scholarships. See Financial Aid. Degree, certificate, and health careers candidates should also see their program websites for information about financial aid.
Nonnegotiable Items
Students must pay with negotiable checks or valid credit cards. If tuition payments are returned unpaid by a bank, students are notified and allowed ten days to make full payment by cash, money order, or credit card. If payment is not received, students are withdrawn from their courses. Students whose credit card companies request a charge-back from the Extension School are withdrawn from their courses immediately. Students who are withdrawn from their courses for nonpayment must appeal for reinstatement, and they remain responsible for all tuition and fees in accordance with the withdrawal and refund schedule.
Students whose checks are returned unpaid by the bank may not use personal checks for Division of Continuing Education payments for one year. Students who stop payment on checks may no longer pay by check.
Stopping payment on checks or credit cards is not a valid method of withdrawing from classes. For withdrawal procedures, see course changes and withdrawals. Students who present a nonnegotiable check are assessed a $25 charge per returned check.
Financial delinquency. Students registering for courses must be in good financial standing with both Harvard Extension School and Harvard Summer School. Any outstanding balance has to be cleared before a student is allowed to register or receive an official transcript. The Extension School credits any new tuition payments that students submit toward outstanding balances. Degree and certificate candidates must be in good financial standing with the Division of Continuing Education and Harvard University to graduate. The Extension School reserves the right to withdraw students from their classes in cases of financial delinquency. In such instances, students are responsible for all tuition and fees.
