An introduction to the language of ancient Greece, covering basic grammar. The course emphasizes reading, with selections from Greek literature supplementing grammatical exercises. Prerequisite: previous study of a foreign language helpful.

More advanced grammar than CGRK E-1a, with an emphasis on developing reading skills. Longer selections of Greek literature are read in addition to grammatical exercises. Upon completion of this course students should be prepared to make the transition to reading classical Greek literature. Prerequisite: CGRK E-1a or equivalent.

In CGRK E-30a and CGRK E-30b we read selections from Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, reviewing thoroughly the morphology, syntax, and prosody of the Greek language. In the final third of CGRK E-30b, we may read selections from other Greek poetry or prose. Although the main purpose of the courses is to develop proficiency in reading Greek, we also discuss the passages we read as literature. Prerequisite: CGRK E-1b or equivalent.
