Health Insurance

Mandatory Coverage

Under Massachusetts law, admitted liberal arts, professional, certificate, and diploma candidates who are registered in 12 or more units per term or who have I-20s issued by the Harvard Extension School must have health insurance. These candidates must enroll in the Harvard University student health plan or certify that they have equivalent US coverage. The Harvard University plan provides comprehensive health care services at University Health Services (UHS), Holyoke Center, and at clinics located in the Medical School area and at the Business and Law Schools. Coverage for services outside of UHS is provided through BlueCross BlueShield. articipation is required by state regulations unless a candidate has equivalent coverage. Spouses and children are also eligible for coverage. For more information candidates should visit www.uhs.harvard.edu or call Harvard Extension School, (617) 495-4024.

The health plan fee is $1,356 for six months. It is charged automatically each term to degree, certificate, and diploma candidates who are admitted to the program by the end of the registration period and who are registered for a minimum of 12 units, or who have I-20s issued by the Harvard Extension School. Periods of coverage are August 1 to January 31 and February 1 to July 31. Shorter coverage periods are not available.

Candidates enrolled in 12 or more units who have other US coverage may waive the Harvard University plan by completing the waiver section on the student health plan information and waiver form. Forms may be downloaded from this website. (To download PDFs students must have Adobe's Acrobat Reader installed on their computers.) They are also included in the insurance packet that is mailed to students after registration. For the health plan charge to be removed from a student's account, waiver forms must be submitted to Student Financial Services, 51 Brattle Street, by October 22 for the fall term and March 21 for the spring term. It is extremely important that waiver forms be submitted by the deadlines as insurance charges cannot be reversed or prorated after the deadlines have passed.

Voluntary Coverage

Harvard Extension School is now able to offer the Harvard University student health plan to all liberal arts, professional, certificate, and diploma candidates regardless of current enrollment status if they have been enrolled within the last two years. (To download PDFs students must have Adobe's Acrobat Reader installed on their computers.) Forms are also available at 51 Brattle Street. Requests for coverage must be made by October 22 for the fall term and March 21 for the spring term. After those deadlines, coverage cannot be added or canceled.
