Master's Thesis or Project

The thesis or project is a research-based requirement, which in most cases builds on the practical experience gained in the internship. After candidates have completed six ALM in Museum Studies courses and the internship, they should consult with the research advisor about their proposed master's thesis or project. Unlike the internship, candidates do not search for thesis or project directors themselves. Instead, the research advisor facilitates this step of the process. They must submit formal proposals, secure approval, and register before beginning work on their theses or projects, which must be supervised by Harvard faculty members or senior-level museum professionals who have been approved by the ALM in Museum Studies advisory board. Copies of A Guide to the ALM in Museum Studies Thesis or Project, which all candidates must consult before beginning this process, may be downloaded from this website (below); they are also available in the ALM in Museum Studies Office.

Downloadable Thesis or Project Guide

To download PDFs students must have Adobe's Acrobat Reader installed on their computers.

Searchable Thesis Database

Degree candidates have access to the extensive theses archives at Grossman Library. During the library's temporary closing this summer, students may search an online database of theses and proposals and make an appointment to view the material. For more information, call the library at (617) 495-4163.
