The Master of Liberal Arts in Mathematics for Teaching is designed for middle and secondary school teachers of mathematics. Experienced in-service teachers, new teachers just entering the profession, and mid-career professionals investigating a change to the teaching profession are all welcome, and the career tracks of all of these individuals have been taken into consideration in the design of the degree. Courses are intended to cover and discuss the mathematics of grades 6-12, and the content has been matched to both Massachusetts and national standards. Mathematical theory is covered in depth, but there is a parallel emphasis on applications in the middle and secondary school classroom.
Daniel L. Goroff envisions the ALM in Mathematics for Teaching thesis projects eventually forming a comprehensive body of work. "In fact, several students working on parallel projects, such as websites or projects that incorporate testing on the effectiveness of new teaching methods or materials, might eventually link their results directly."
