CSS Courses
Courses marked (H) count toward the Harvard-affiliated instructor requirement. Some courses are offered both terms or in multiple sections. If all the sections are taught by Harvard-affiliated instructors, (H) appears after the course title. If only selected sections are taught by Harvard-affiliated instructors, the instructor is listed by name (H: McManus and White only). Courses marked by a plus (+) are available via the Internet.
English proficiency. Before beginning CSS courses, students whose primary language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Proficiency can be demonstrated in one of the following ways:
- Earning a score of 70 or higher on the Harvard University English Language Placement Test. The placement test may be taken only once per semester. The placement test does not replace the TOEFL requirement for admission to the CSS Program. Students must satisfy the TOEFL requirement to be admitted as candidates.
- Submitting to the CSS Office an official score of at least 250 on the computer-based TOEFL or 600 on the paper-based TOEFL. Scores must be sent directly to the CSS Office from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The Harvard Extension School institution code is 3458 and the department code is 02.
- Submitting to the CSS Office an official transcript of four full years of study at a college or university where English was the sole means of instruction. Transcripts must be sent directly by the registrars to the CSS Office.
The last placement test is given September 9 for fall courses and January 19 for spring courses. TOEFL scores and transcripts must be received by September 17 for fall courses and January 28 for spring courses.
Students who register for CSS courses but do not meet this English proficiency requirement are withdrawn from these courses by the Registrar. The Extension School reserves the right to refuse to count courses toward the CSS that were begun or completed without the student first completing the English proficiency requirement, and, in certain cases, to take additional disciplinary action against the student.
Note: To understand how the courses listed below fulfill program requirements, students should read the Requirements section.
