Concentrations

The ALM in IT offers three areas of concentration, each with its own requirements.

Software Engineering

For students who already have a background in both object-oriented programming using C++ or Java (at the level of data structures) and in discrete mathematics, this concentration provides formal training in the use of systematic engineering principles applied to the design, construction, and maintenance of large software applications. This discipline covers not only the technical aspects of applying formal computer science and mathematical methods to building cost-effective software systems, but also such management issues as working with teams of programmers. See Software Engineering courses.

Mathematics and Computation

This concentration provides students with up-to-date courses that cover developments in the uses of mathematics and computing as they apply to industry. Intended primarily for practicing and prospective engineers, scientists, and consultants, as well as government professionals who are involved with math, science, and technology, this program of study combines ideas from calculus, discrete mathematics, geometry, linear algebra and statistics, software engineering, and computer network design.See Mathematics and Computation courses.

Information Management Systems

This concentration is geared toward individuals who are interested in the intersection of technology and management, and wish to understand the links between business strategy and information technology. Students learn both the theory and practice of how business processes, organizations, and global competition are transformed by developments in data communications, database management, web technologies, and distributed computing. See Information Management Systems courses.
